A Special Evening With Friends

8:00 PM | Doors open 7:00 PM

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Susana Baca will not be performing with Snarky Puppy at Kings Theatre on April 18. We are, however, delighted that Gaby Moreno and Fuensanta will be joining in her stead alongside Silvia Perez Cruz and Silvana Estrada for this very special evening of music. We will be taking the opportunity to celebrate Susana’s legacy so that she will be with us in spirit.

In a very special show mirroring their “Family Dinner” series, 5-time Grammy winners Snarky Puppy will play host to four of the most important singers in the Spanish-speaking world. Silvana Estrada (Mexico), Silvia Pérez-Cruz (Spain), Gaby Moreno (Guatemala) and Fuensanta (Mexico) represent different generations, continents, and musical traditions, but are bound together by their ability to communicate the deepest of emotions through song. This very special performance will feature music by all four women arranged by and performed with Snarky Puppy.

Snarky Puppy

After over a decade of relentless touring and recording in all but complete obscurity, the Texas-bred quasi-collective suddenly found itself held up by the press and public as one of the major figures in the jazz world.

But as the category names for all five of the band’s Grammy® awards would indicate (Best R&B Performance in 2014, Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2016, 2017, 2021, and 2023), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band, and it’s definitely not a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of the New York Times’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.”

Snarky Puppy is a collective of sorts with as many as 20 members in regular rotation. At its core, the band represents the convergence of both black and white American music culture with various accents from around the world. The defining characteristic of Snarky Puppy’s music is the joy of performing together in the perpetual push to grow creatively.

Always evolving in its musical output, each new record brings a new vision and progressive direction, “Snarky Puppy has always been a band that prioritizes the sound of music, our rule is that it can’t sound like it sounded before” comments League, he continues, “the music has to feel like it’s moving somewhere”

And moving somewhere it most definitely has. The Empire Central World Tour, which started in the USA in April 2022, has taken the band to 30 US States and 33 countries around the world. It’s incredible, although not at all surprising, how far Snarky Puppy have come since ten friends got together at the University of North Texas in 2004.  It also raises the question – where will Snarky Puppy go next? For Snarky Puppy fans, the answer to this question is a very exciting prospect.

Silvana Estrada

Silvana Estrada sings from down deep, telling her soulful coming-of-age stories in a voice that embraces the legacy of Latin American song and carries it into the 21st Century. Called “one of Mexico’s greatest young talents and vocalists” by KCRW’s José Galvan, Silvana, who is 23 years old, is the new voice of a movement of independent female artists who have characterized Latin Alternative music over the past decade.

Silvia Pérez Cruz

Sílvia Pérez Cruz is one of the most striking voices of recent times; in the words of Jorge Drexler, “a voice that marks a generation”. She is a composer as well as a singer, and has spoken the language of music for as long as she can remember. Exposed to popular Spanish and Latin songs from an early age, she studied classical music and jazz, and was later bewitched by flamenco, to which she has an almost supernatural connection. Her voice is unique and electrifying.

Gaby Moreno

Armed with a warm, soulful sound, Gaby Moreno creates music that offers an intoxicating invitation into her musical world for English and Spanish speakers alike. Since moving to Los Angeles from her native Guatemala, singer-songwriter-producer Gaby Moreno has released 7 albums, earned a Grammy nomination for her albums and won two Latin Grammy Awards, and has shared the international stage with pop music luminaries such as Bono, Andrea Boccelli, Tracy Chapman, Ani DiFranco, and more.

Fuensanta is a singer, double bassist, composer and improviser born in the water forest of Veracruz [Mexico] and based in Amsterdam. Her music holds rare and simple poetry to be a sincere crystal that helps open a surreal vision over the things in the world.
